Summary: The objective of this project is to simulate the inception, development and treatment of a common cancer in women, namely, Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) using agent based simulation methods. NetLogo, a freely available programming cum modeling environment for agent-based simulation is the platform used for developing the model of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). The Two-Hit Hypothesis of cancer development has been used to simulate the inception of cancer. Cell cycle durations in normal and transformed cells have been taken into consideration while developing the model. The process of metastasis and effects of chemotherapy have also been simulated. The representative chemotherapeutic agent chosen is the nitrogen mustard alkylator, Cytoxan. The simulation closely mimics the general process of cancer growth and is an useful tool for pedagogic purposes.
