<subfield code="a">Anaerobic digestion presents an attractive alternative for generation of energy from various biomass feedstock. The biogas produced contains methane that can be used as fuel. Several researchers have reported the benefits of anaerobic digestion in the treatment of wastewater, organic fraction of municipal solid waste and also degradation of lignocellulosic biomass. India being a tropical country has abundant biomass reserve, along with MSW; the two form a surplus energy resource. Lignocellulosic biomass comprises of a closely-knit network of high molecular weight polysaccharides like cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The variation of these structural components among the different feedstocks affect the total gas production. Apart from structural components various other factors affect the fermentation characteristics. This study deals with the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into biogas by the hydrolysis and fermentation of sugars and also looks into the effect of l</subfield>
